Hot Sauce Tofu Scramble

A classic tofu scramble with a hot-sauce twist, this protein-packed recipe is amazing with a big cooked breakfast but equally fantastic as a simple meal on toast or with fresh sliced avocado. This hot-sauce tofu scramble is so easy to make and packed with flavour!

Hot sauce spicy tofu scramble

When I first stopped eating meat, eggs, and dairy, tofu was definitely not number one on my list of ingredients to start eating more of.

Honestly, for the first couple of months I really struggled with the texture and taste, and any attempts I made at cooking with tofu resulted in a spongy, soggy mess that I couldn’t wait to be over.

Thankfully, almost three years into my plant-based journey I have fully mastered the art of good tofu, and one of my go-to recipes when I’m cooking a big, hearty breakfast is this hot sauce tofu scramble. Serve this tofu scramble with homemade crispy hash browns!

Making this hot sauce tofu scramble

Tofu scramble is one of the easiest ways to cook with tofu! To make this recipe, you’ll want to use extra-firm tofu.

Silken tofu ends up far too soft and runny, but firm tofu can be crumbled to resemble an ‘scrambled egg’ texture and won’t just dissolve into nothing as you cook it.

You’ll start by heating some oil in a pan, then crumbling your tofu into the pan and adding your spices. If you’re using added veggies like red onion or bell pepper, add that here, too.

After cooking, add 1 – 2 tbsp of your favourite hot sauce. I love Frank’s Red Hot or Nando’s Hot Sauce, but whatever you like best! Grating some vegan cheese here can also really take things up a level.

Serve with a cooked breakfast of hashbrowns, grilled mushrooms and tomatoes, and guacamole for a real treat!

  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 2 tbsp hot sauce
  • cooking spray/ oil

Instructions

  1. Remove your tofu from the packaging and drain
  2. Heat a frying pan and add your oil
  3. Add your minced garlic and fry for about a minute until fragrant, then crumble your tofu into the pan.
  4. Add your spices, and then use a spatula to break up any bigger tofu pieces so the mix resembles scrambled egg. Cook for 4 - 5 minutes, adding more seasoning to your taste.
  5. Add in the hot sauce, mixing it into the tofu and cook for another 1 - 2 minutes.
  6. Serve!

Make this recipe to pair with hash browns, use in breakfast burritos, tacos, or simply as an egg-alternative for cooked breakfasts!
