Creamy Salsa Dressing

This creamy salsa dressing is ready in less than 5 minutes, uses just 10 simple ingredients, and is the perfect sauce for all your Tex-Mex favorites. Made with a Greek yogurt base, it's lighter than a traditional mayo-based dressing but still packed with flavor - creamy, tangy, and with just the right amount of kick.

I make this salsa dressing on repeat - it's become a permanent fixture in my fridge. I drizzle it over burrito bowls, spoon it into burritos, and use it as a dip for crispy Mexican potatoes. If you love creamy, tangy dressings that go with everything, this one's for you. It's also inspired by the popular Chick-fil-A creamy salsa dressing, but made with real, simple ingredients and no additives.

For another go-to sauce, try my creamy jalapeno sauce - it's amazing in vegetarian fajitas and alongside Mexican pinto beans.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

I make a version of this dip almost every time we have tacos, burritos, or loaded fries! It's ridiculously easy to whip together, and the perfect tasty but healthy sauce with so many Tex-Mex style recipes.

This creamy salsa dressing is one of those recipes that punches way above its weight. It takes 5 minutes, uses pantry staples, and makes absolutely everything taste better. The Greek yogurt base means it's high in protein and lighter than most creamy dressings so that you can be generous with it without the guilt.

Ingredient Notes

The exact quantities of the ingredients you need for this recipe are included in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here, I've added a few notes on the ingredients you need, plus a few potential substitutions you could make if you can't eat/find a certain ingredient.

a shot of all the ingredients for the salsa dressing: Greek yogurt, salsa, seasonings, lime juice, and cilantro
  • Greek yogurt: Forms the creamy base and adds protein to the sauce! For a richer dressing closer to the Chick-fil-A original, you could swap half the yogurt for mayo, sour cream, or a mix of both.
  • Salsa: Use whatever brand of red salsa you like best - chunky or smooth, mild or hot. It really doesn't matter as long as you enjoy the flavor.
  • Lime juice: Gives the dressing its essential tangy brightness. Apple cider vinegar or white wine vinegar would both work as substitutes.
  • Cilantro: Fresh cilantro makes a real difference here - avoid using dried if you can. If you're not a cilantro fan, flat-leaf parsley works too.
  • Seasonings: A blend of garlic powder, paprika, cumin, chili powder, onion powder, and salt. Adjust the chili powder to taste for more or less heat.

How to Make This Creamy Salsa Dressing Recipe

Step 1: Prep Your Ingredients

Juice your lime (if using) and roughly chop your cilantro. Add all the ingredients to your blender - I use a Nutribullet, but a hand immersion blender on quick, short pulses works too.

If you don't have a blender, finely chop the cilantro and simply stir everything together in a bowl. If you're using a chunkier salsa, your dressing will be on the chunkier side - which is absolutely fine!

Step 2: Blend

Blend all the ingredients into a smooth, creamy sauce. Taste and adjust any seasonings to your preferences.

Expert Tips for the Best Creamy Salsa Dressing

I perfected this recipe over a series of weeks, first using my own preference for a spicy-but-creamy sauce, then taking inspiration from the infamous Chick-fil-A creamy salad dressing to create the sauce as it is today.

Here are a few tips I've picked up when making this sauce:

  • Don't overblend: When using Greek yogurt as a base, the dressing can turn too runny if you blend for too long. A few quick bursts are all you need to bring everything together.
  • Add jalapenos for extra heat: A tablespoon of diced jalapenos blended in takes this to another level - almost like a blend of this dressing and my creamy jalapeno sauce.
  • Adjust the base for a richer texture: For a thicker, more indulgent dressing, try these ratios instead of all Greek yogurt: ½ cup sour cream + ½ cup Greek yogurt, or ½ cup mayo + ½ cup Greek yogurt.

What to Serve with Creamy Salsa Dressing

This is one of the most versatile sauces in my recipe collection. Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

Storage

Store any leftover creamy salsa dressing in an airtight container or jar in the fridge for up to 3 days. If it separates slightly, just give it a stir, and it should be good to go.

FAQs

Is this creamy salsa dressing spicy?

That depends on the salsa you use! A mild salsa or pico de gallo will keep things gentle, while a hot salsa will bring more heat. You can also add a tablespoon of hot sauce if you want an extra kick.

Is this recipe vegan?

The recipe uses Greek yogurt, so it's vegetarian but not vegan as written. To make it vegan, swap the Greek yogurt for a dairy-free yogurt alternative or vegan mayo.

Is this the same as Chick-fil-A creamy salsa dressing?

It's inspired by it! The Chick-fil-A version uses a soya oil and egg yolk base (essentially mayo), while this recipe uses Greek yogurt for a lighter, higher-protein alternative. The core flavors - tomato, lime, cumin, garlic, cilantro - are very similar.

Can I meal prep a creamy salsa dressing?

Yes! It's actually a great one to make ahead as the flavors develop nicely in the fridge. Make it a day before and store it in a jar - perfect for meal prep.

Notes

Take care not to overblend your salsa dressing - when using Greek yogurt as a base, I find that the dressing can turn too liquid-y quickly if you blend it for a long time. A few quick bursts should be enough to bring everything together!
If you want a spicier version of this recipe, you could add a tablespoon of jalapenos or 2 tablespoon hot sauce.
