Ingredient Notes

The exact quantities of the ingredients you need for this recipe are included in the recipe card at the bottom of this post. Here, I’ve added a few notes on the ingredients you need, plus a few potential substitutions you could make if you can’t eat/find a certain ingredient.

avocado lime crema ingredients list: avocado, lime, seasonings, cilantro, sour cream
  • Avocado: Use one large, ripe avocado for this recipe.
  • Lime: I use the juice of about half to 1 whole lime for this recipe, depending on the size of the lime! I recommend adding half and then tasting the sauce before adding more if you prefer.
  • Sour Cream: Sour cream gives this crema a lovely creamy texture, but you do have a few alternative options. Cream cheese, Greek yogurt, or a combination of any of these three will also work perfectly. Greek yogurt will give you an avocado lime crema that is low in fat and slightly higher in protein.
  • Cilantro: The fresh, herby flavor of cilantro is an excellent addition to this sauce.
  • Seasonings: You don’t need a lot of seasonings for this recipe since the lime and avocado shine on their own, but a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, and flaky salt complements the other ingredients in this recipe perfectly.
  • Water: You’ll need a few tablespoons of water to help loosen the ingredients into a smooth and creamy sauce. I add two tablespoons and then increase if I feel it’s needed to avoid my sauce getting too runny!

Variations and Substitutions

  • Add Heat: For a spicy kick, add a small jalapeño or a dash of hot sauce to the mixture. Similar to my creamy jalapeno sauce, but with avocado added!
  • Vegan Option: Use a dairy-free sour cream or yogurt to make this recipe vegan.

How To Make This Avocado Lime Crema Recipe

Again, the exact step-by-step instructions and ingredient quantities will be in the recipe card at the bottom of this page.

Below is an overview of making this recipe, plus some process shots to help you visualize how this recipe should turn out.

Step 1) Make The Sauce

Add the avocado, sour cream, lime juice, water, cilantro, and seasonings to your blender and blend until you have a smooth and creamy sauce.

Step 2) Adjust As Necessary

Taste the sauce and adjust as necessary. You might want to add more water for a thinner consistency to drizzle over nachos, or you might want to add more lime juice for a zingy kick.

What To Serve Your Avocado Lime Crema With

This crema is great with loaded cheesy nachos, black bean tacos, burritos, or even as a dressing for salads – like I’ve done in this tofu burrito bowl!

I also served this avocado lime crema with these spicy Mexican potatoes, and they’d be delicious served as a dip with these Mexican tortilla pizzas or with a delicious one-pot taco bowl!

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The avocado may oxidize, so cover the surface with plastic wrap before sealing.

I wouldn’t recommend freezing this recipe, as the sour cream and the avocado change quite considerably in texture after freezing and defrosting.

Q: Can I make this crema ahead of time?

A: Yes, you can prepare it a few hours in advance, but be sure to cover it tightly to prevent oxidation (which could turn the sauce brown!)

Q: What can I use if I don’t have sour cream?

A: Greek yogurt, cream cheese, or a dairy-free alternative such as plain coconut or soya yogurt can all work as substitutes for sour cream.

Q: Can I add more lime juice?

A: Yes, adjust the lime juice to taste if you prefer a more tangy crema. The same is true of all the ingredients listed here!

Q: Why is my sauce runnier than yours?

If this has happened, you may have used too much water or over-blended the mixture. Hopefully it’s still yummy, though!

Avocado Lime Crema

Avocado Lime Crema

Yield: 1.5 cups
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This easy avocado lime crema is ready in under 5 minutes and makes the perfect sauce for burritos, quesadillas, nachos, and more Mexican-inspired recipes.

  • 1 large ripe avocado
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 0.5 tsp onion powder
  • 15g fresh cilantro
  • 100g sour cream
  • 2 tbsp water

  1. Halve your avocado and remove the seed, then scoop the avocado out of its skin into your blender.
  2. Add the lime juice, salt, garlic powder, onion powder, cilantro, and sour cream.
  3. Blend the ingredients until you have a smooth, creamy sauce (60 seconds).
  4. Serve with a sprinkle of flaky salt and use as a dip or sauce for all your favorite Mexican-style foods!

Take care not to over blitz your ingredients as the sauce can end up too runny. Blend for 30 - 40 seconds, check the sauce, and add another tablespoon of water if needed.
